Short answer

What is Azure AI Speech and who should use it?

Azure AI Speech is a capable general speech platform with strong compliance and the option of moving up into Nuance's clinical products. On its own it is general-purpose ASR, so the clinical documentation layer remains yours to build.

Overview

Azure is the natural choice for teams already inside the Microsoft ecosystem, particularly where an enterprise agreement and BAA already exist. Custom speech models and broad language support are real strengths.

For clinical documentation specifically, the base service is general-purpose: medical vocabulary and note generation live in the Nuance product line, which is an enterprise purchase with a different commercial shape.

Integration surface

What an engineering team is actually buying: the API posture, how you authenticate, what you send and what comes back.

Strengths

Where it scores well

  • Strong compliance posture and enterprise agreements already in place for many buyers.
  • Custom speech model training and very broad language coverage.
  • Published pricing and self-serve access.
  • A documented upgrade path into Nuance clinical products.

Limitations

Where it loses points

  • General-purpose ASR — clinical vocabulary and note generation are not the base product.
  • No clinical note structuring or template layer.
  • Clinical depth requires a separate Nuance enterprise engagement.

Best fit

Microsoft-ecosystem teams that need solid ASR now and may move to Nuance clinical products later.
